Are Icons Worth It

Icons are fun, and many are strong, but not every Icon is worth your resources. First ask whether the card enters your starting lineup and stays there for a while.

Worth considering

SituationVerdict
Fixes a starting weaknessStrong candidate
Plays a scarce positionUsually better value
Uses spare event materialsLower risk
Untradeable but long-term usefulAcceptable

Be careful when the Icon repeats a position you already have covered, or when completing the exchange forces you to sell several starters.

Nostalgia is fine as long as you know you are paying for it. If it empties the account and does not improve the team, wait.

When not to force it

  • You need to sell several starters to complete the exchange.
  • Later event rewards are still unclear.
  • A market card in the same position is cheaper and fits your style better.
  • The Icon is mainly nostalgia and does not solve a real squad problem.

Icon names can make a card feel safer than it is. If the role is unclear, treat it like any other expensive upgrade and wait for more information.

Check the position first

Core positions such as ST, CAM, CDM, CB, and GK usually hold value better when the card is genuinely strong. Wide players and fullbacks can still be good, but they depend more on pace, stamina, and the current version feel.

Icons to check by role

Icon value depends on card version, tradeability, and exchange cost. Do not force every Icon just because of the name.

TypeExample PlayersWhy They Fit
Attack coreRonaldo Nazario, Eusebio, Ronaldinho, CruyffCan change the quality of ST, CF, CAM, or wide attack immediately.
Midfield coreGullit, Zidane, Vieira, MatthausUseful for many formations because they do more than one job.
Defensive coreMaldini, Lucio, Blanc, Roberto CarlosStrong long-term defensive profiles, not only collection cards.
GoalkeeperVan der Sar, Yashin, Cech, SchmeichelCan last a long time if the model and consistency are good.

Spend resources carefully

Before exchanging, break the cost down: can the materials be used elsewhere, are they tradeable, and will this stop your next event target? In FC Mobile, resources are not only about one card; they decide what you can still upgrade over the next few weeks.

It is fine to exchange for a favorite player if it does not hurt squad growth. If it empties the account, waiting is safer.

Check long-term positions first

Icons are best when they fill positions you will use for a long time. ST, CAM, CDM, CB, and GK are usually safer core slots. Wide players and fullbacks can be good too, but they depend more on version pace and stamina, so they may age faster.

If you often change formations, prefer Icons with flexible roles: midfielders who can do more than one job, attackers who can play lone striker or partner striker, and stable CBs.

Untradeable Icons need a higher bar. A tradeable card can be sold if it feels wrong; an untradeable card becomes bench rating. Ask whether the card will still start a month from now. If the answer is unclear, wait.

Compare with market cards

The Icon name can distort the decision. Compare it with market cards at a similar cost: body type, Weak Foot, pace, key stats, training cost, and tradeability. Some market cards are less famous but fit your style better and can be sold later.

If the cost is mostly event-only materials, the risk is lower. If it takes many high-OVR tradeable players or generic materials, count their market value. Materials in your club are not automatically free.

Do not let nostalgia block urgent upgrades. If you love an Icon winger but your CB and CDM are weak, the defense may need coins first. Once the squad core is stable, favorite cards are easier to enjoy.

Testing matters more than tier lists

Same-name Icons can feel very different by version. When reading recommendations, check the version, training level, mode, and formation. A card that feels great in H2H may not be stable in Manager Mode. A VSA finisher may not hold the ball well in H2H.

If you cannot test the card, look for several types of feedback: feel, body type, weak foot, runs, and how replaceable it is. One-word answers like “worth it” miss too much context.

The safest Icon exchange fills a clear starting weakness and does not damage your next upgrades. If those are true, nostalgia is a bonus. If not, it can become an expensive bench card.
